Thomas Frank says Tottenham have an obvious choice with Destiny Udogie despite his ‘traumatic’ ordeal

Destiny Udogie has received praise for his performances at Tottenham, despite reportedly being threatened at gunpoint in North London. The Metropolitan Police are investigating the September 6 incident, while Spurs have shown support for Udogie and his family. After a period out with injury, the Italian full-back has returned to action, highlighting just how crucial he is to the team.

Udogie played a starring role in Tottenham’s 4-0 UEFA Champions League win over Copenhagen, dominating the left flank both offensively and defensively. However, he started on the bench for Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Manchester United on November 8. While Djed Spence has performed well in his absence, Tottenham expert John Wenham believes the team is noticeably stronger with Udogie on the pitch.

“He’s managed to stay focused on football despite the trauma, and it’s great to see him back. The team performs better with him, and a left-footed player suits our style more,” Wenham said.

Comparing the two left-backs, Udogie slightly outshines Spence. While Spence is stronger in the air, Udogie excels in defensive duels and is a superior progressive passer and assister. Offensively, Spence is better at carrying the ball and delivering accurate crosses, but Tottenham looked more threatening once Udogie came on against United, contributing to Mathys Tel’s equalizer.

Given his impact, Udogie should be Thomas Frank’s first-choice left-back moving forward.
