Transfer insider reveals when Liverpool are likely to begin negotiations over a new contract for Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson has less than eight months remaining on his current Liverpool contract, but a trusted source has suggested that discussions over an extension could begin soon.

The 31-year-old, who joined the Reds from Hull City in July 2017, is now the third-longest-serving player in the squad. He admitted earlier this year that he came close to joining Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool could soon open contract talks with Robertson
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has hinted that Liverpool may begin talks over a new deal around the New Year, when Robertson will be six months away from being able to leave as a free agent.

Speaking to 67 Hail Hail, Bailey said:
“Everyone knows about Robertson’s connection to Celtic, but I’m told he still firmly believes he has a future at Liverpool. His contract is running down, yet the expectation is that discussions will start soon – likely early in the New Year. It may not be a long-term deal, but he’s shown this season that he’s still performing at the highest level.”

Robertson remains key for Liverpool on and off the field
After initially losing his place to Milos Kerkez earlier in the campaign, Robertson has reclaimed the left-back role in recent matches under Arne Slot. His tactical awareness, such as blocking defenders during set pieces to create space for Virgil van Dijk, highlights his continued importance to the team.

Beyond his performances, the Scotland captain’s leadership and professionalism make him an invaluable presence in the dressing room, much like James Milner in previous years. His influence helps set the standard for younger players, while his experience – including two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph – adds immense value to the squad.

With Kerkez still adapting to life at Anfield, it makes perfect sense for Liverpool to push for Robertson to extend his stay. The only risk of delaying talks until January is that foreign clubs could then approach him with a pre-contract offer. However, Bailey’s update suggests that Robertson’s priority is to remain at Liverpool – news that would certainly delight the Anfield faithful.
