A transfer expert has suggested the possible timeframe for when Liverpool might begin discussions over a new contract for Andy Robertson.
Andy Robertson has entered the final stretch of his Liverpool contract, with less than eight months remaining on his current deal. However, a trusted transfer insider has suggested that discussions over a new agreement could begin in the near future.
The 31-year-old defender, who joined Liverpool from Hull City in July 2017, is now the third-longest serving player in the squad. Despite admitting that he was close to joining Atletico Madrid over the summer, Robertson has continued to show his commitment to the Reds.
Recently, Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reported that Celtic — the club Robertson supported growing up — are keeping tabs on his situation as a key decision on his future approaches.
According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are expected to initiate contract talks with the Scotland captain around the New Year, when he’ll be six months away from being eligible to leave on a free transfer. Speaking to 67 Hail Hail, Bailey explained:
> “Everyone knows Robertson’s connection with Celtic, but I’m told he still believes he has a future at Liverpool. His deal is running down, but the club are likely to start talks with him soon — probably heading into the New Year. It won’t be a long-term extension, but he’s shown he’s still capable of performing at the top level.”
Although Robertson started the season behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order, he has reclaimed his place as Arne Slot’s first-choice left-back in recent matches. His intelligent positioning and sharp movement — such as drawing defenders away at corners to create space for Virgil van Dijk — continue to make him a valuable asset on the pitch.
Off the field, Robertson’s leadership and professionalism remain just as important. Much like James Milner before him, the Scotland skipper plays a key role in setting standards within the squad and mentoring younger players, drawing from his vast experience and trophy-winning pedigree that includes Premier League and Champions League triumphs.
With Kerkez still adapting to life at Anfield, it would make perfect sense for Liverpool to extend Robertson’s stay a bit longer. While delaying talks until January could risk interest from foreign clubs, Bailey’s update suggests the player’s desire is to continue his journey at Liverpool — news that would surely delight fans across the Kop.
