‘Calm’ Andy Robertson discusses Liverpool contract situation as Reds supporters left uncertain about his future
Andy Robertson has left Liverpool supporters uncertain about whether he’ll still be at Anfield this time next year.
The Scottish defender has entered the final eight months of his current deal, with journalist Graeme Bailey suggesting on Monday that talks over an extension will “probably” begin around the New Year. By then, the 31-year-old will be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs.
Having initially fallen behind Milos Kerkez in Arne Slot’s pecking order earlier this season, Robertson has since reclaimed his place in the starting XI, featuring in Liverpool’s last three matches.
Robertson addresses his contract situation
The Reds’ long-serving left-back has now spoken publicly about his future, admitting that he’s “relaxed” about what lies ahead while giving little away regarding a potential renewal.
Speaking to The Independent, he said:
“Whatever happens will happen behind closed doors and I’m relaxed about the whole situation. If it is my last year, then it’s my last year. If it’s not, then so be it.
I had quite a stressful summer with a few decisions to make, so I’ve told myself to just enjoy the next few months. Eventually, it’ll probably take over my life – that’s what happens when you enter the final six months. For now, I’m just focusing on football.
I’m delighted to be back on the pitch and playing regularly again. That’s what matters most. The club has been amazing for me, and I’m really grateful.”
Robertson keeps fans guessing
The Scotland captain’s composed and diplomatic comments are typical of a player well-versed in handling sensitive contract questions. His remarks could either suggest confidence that discussions will naturally progress, or serve as a gentle hint that he’s open to moving on for a new challenge next summer – as he nearly did with Atletico Madrid earlier this year.
By that point, Robertson will be 32 and marking nine seasons at Anfield – a milestone few could begrudge him if he opts for a change of scenery. Still, many fans will hope he decides there’s more left to achieve in a Liverpool shirt.
His recent return to the starting lineup under Slot could prove crucial in determining his future. Should he continue to be preferred to Kerkez, the likelihood of a contract renewal may well increase.
For now, supporters can simply appreciate having the ever-reliable and spirited Glaswegian back in the team – just in case this season does turn out to be his last in red.
