Liverpool set to revive January pursuit of long-term transfer target first linked in 2022
Liverpool are reportedly preparing a January move for a highly rated winger who has rejuvenated his career in Europe after an underwhelming stint in the Premier League.
According to reports, the Reds are eyeing Bayern Munich and Germany star Serge Gnabry, but face stiff competition from Juventus for his signature.
Arne Slot’s men have endured a difficult start to their Premier League title defence, with Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City leaving them eighth in the table — eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal after six wins and five losses from their opening 11 matches.
Despite a record-breaking £424 million summer outlay that saw Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Florian Wirtz arrive at Anfield, results have not matched expectations. Slot, however, retains the board’s backing after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title last season.
The Reds missed out on Marc Guehi in the summer after a late collapse in negotiations with Crystal Palace, though the England international remains a target for several top European clubs — including Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich — with Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirming the defender will not renew his deal beyond 2026.
Now, attention has turned to strengthening in attack, with La Gazzetta dello Sport claiming Liverpool are keen on Gnabry, whose contract with Bayern runs until 2026.
The 30-year-old, who can also operate as a second striker, started his career at Arsenal but left for Werder Bremen in 2016 after an unsuccessful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion. Since joining Bayern in 2017, he has developed into one of Europe’s most consistent wingers, winning six Bundesliga titles and a Champions League, among numerous honours.
Gnabry reportedly earns €362,885 (£320,824) per week, making him Bayern’s fourth-highest earner behind Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, and Joshua Kimmich — a figure that would rank him as Liverpool’s third-highest-paid player after Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
In a 2020 interview with CBS Sports, Gnabry expressed affection for Arsenal, saying they would be his “favourite” destination should he return to England. The German international was previously linked with Liverpool following Sadio Mané’s departure to Bayern in 2022.
