Liverpool set to launch January move for long-term transfer target first identified in 2022
Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for a highly rated winger this January, though they’ll face stiff competition from Juventus for his signature.
Arne Slot’s men have endured a rocky start to their Premier League title defence. Following a 3–0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad, the Reds sit eighth in the table, with five losses and six wins from 11 games — eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Despite the poor run, Slot’s position appears secure for now, having led Liverpool to the league title last season. However, after spending a record £424 million in the summer on the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Florian Wirtz, the Dutchman will be desperate for improvement after the international break.
Liverpool also came close to signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi before a late collapse in negotiations. The England international is attracting further attention from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, with Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirming the player won’t renew his deal, which expires in 2026.
While it remains uncertain whether Liverpool will reignite their pursuit of Guehi in January, they are expected to strengthen the squad in other areas.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are preparing to battle Juventus for Bayern Munich and Germany star Serge Gnabry, whose contract situation has sparked growing interest across Europe.
The 30-year-old, who began his career in England with Arsenal before flourishing in Germany, has been a key figure for Bayern since joining in 2017 — winning six Bundesliga titles and the Champions League among his many honours.
Gnabry, capable of operating as a winger or second striker, is currently under contract until June 2026 and earns around €362,885 (£320,824) per week — the fourth-highest salary at Bayern. That figure would make him Liverpool’s third-highest earner behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
Interestingly, Gnabry has previously spoken fondly of Arsenal, telling CBS Sports in 2020 that the Gunners would be his “favourite” destination if he ever returned to England. Liverpool were also linked with the German back in 2022 following Sadio Mané’s move to Bayern.
