Tottenham icon Son Heung-min clears the air over ‘Beckham Clause’ winter loan rumours
Son Heung-min has ruled out a winter loan move from LAFC, despite speculation linking him with several major European clubs.
The South Korean forward, who joined the MLS side from Tottenham in August after a decade in north London, has been the subject of mounting transfer rumours in recent weeks.
MLS contracts include a so-called “Beckham Clause,” which allows players to secure short-term loan deals during the league’s off-season. With the MLS season ending in December and the 2026 campaign not resuming until late February, such moves are sometimes used to help players maintain fitness and form.
Reports in October suggested that both AC Milan and Tottenham were interested in a temporary deal for Son, but the 33-year-old has now dismissed those rumours.
Speaking to South Korean outlet Chosun, Son said:
“Many people are curious, and the rumours are uncomfortable. Fans must be confused too. My principle has always been to give everything to the team I’m currently playing for. The rumours aren’t true.
“I’ve never discussed moving to another club this winter. Even mentioning such talks would be disrespectful to LAFC. I can confirm there’s no truth to it.”
Son added that he plans to use the off-season to rest and prepare for next summer’s World Cup, where he is expected to captain South Korea at his fourth tournament.
“I’m focusing on recharging during the winter and getting ready for the World Cup,” he continued. “I hope these rumours don’t come up again. I respect and value LAFC. Leaving my team to join another could lead to injury and would go against my commitment to the club, my health, and the fans.”
LAFC return to action on November 23, facing the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Western Conference semi-finals. Son has been in fine form, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in 12 appearances for the club, including a win over Austin FC in the MLS Cup play-offs.
Last month, Son also revealed his plans to return to London during the off-season to say a proper farewell to Tottenham fans following last season’s Europa League triumph in Bilbao.
He is currently part of the South Korea national team for upcoming friendlies against Bolivia and Ghana.
