Guardiola has proposed a surprising swap offer to Tottenham that could become one of the smartest deals of the January window
Tottenham Hotspur’s season has descended into disarray, with a mix of injuries and key departures exposing major gaps in their creativity. The biggest setback came before the campaign even began, when star midfielder James Maddison tore the ACL in his right knee during a pre-season match against Newcastle in Seoul.
The 28-year-old, who was instrumental last season with his imagination and playmaking, is now set for surgery and a long recovery that could rule him out for most of the 2025–26 season. It follows a lesser knee problem in May that disrupted his Europa League run, but this latest injury is far more severe—leaving Spurs desperate for a new No. 10 to fill the void.
Adding to the upheaval was Heung-Min Son’s emotional summer departure to LAFC in a record MLS transfer worth over £20 million. After ten years in north London and a Europa League triumph in Bilbao, the Spurs legend joined former teammate Hugo Lloris in California. His absence on the left wing—where his speed and consistent 20-goal seasons shaped the club’s attack—has left a major hole.
New manager Thomas Frank, appointed in June on a three-year deal, now faces the task of restoring creativity to a team missing its two most reliable match-winners. His high-energy, fluid system requires inventive midfielders, making Maddison’s loss even more damaging.
That’s where Savinho enters the picture. The 21-year-old Brazilian, now a top Tottenham target, was signed by Manchester City for £35 million after a brilliant stint at Girona. Though he managed three goals and 13 assists in 48 games last season, he’s struggled for regular minutes at City behind attackers like Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki. His standout display at Girona in 2023–24—11 goals from the left—showcased traits reminiscent of a young Son: sharp dribbling, creativity, and clinical finishing.
While Guardiola has mostly used him on the right, Savinho also excels as a central playmaker, offering the sort of versatility Spurs desperately need. Internal solutions such as Dejan Kulusevski have stepped in at No. 10, but he lacks Maddison’s specialist creativity. Savinho, by contrast, is seen as a genuine difference-maker who fits Frank’s youth-driven rebuild, which has already cost the club £120 million this summer.
The Brazilian is also eager for regular minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup—something Tottenham can offer.
The plot thickens with a potential swap deal suggested by Guardiola himself, involving Kulusevski—valued at £40–50 million—as part of a package for Savinho. With City also circling Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, the proposal could appeal to both clubs. Spurs’ earlier £60 million offers were rejected, but with Maddison’s injury worsening their creative crisis, January could bring a breakthrough.
Such a deal would add depth, replace Son’s attacking spark, and inject fresh flair into Frank’s system—possibly transforming Tottenham’s top-four ambitions. In a market full of inflated prices, this swap could become one of Spurs’ smartest moves in years.
