Liverpool owners FSG have dropped their pursuit of £100m-rated LaLiga club Getafe, dealing a setback to their plans for a wider multi-club network.

Fenway Sports Group, owners of Liverpool, have officially ended their strong interest in acquiring LaLiga club Getafe.

Daily Mail Sport revealed in September that FSG, led by John W. Henry, had progressed through due diligence over the summer and were still keen on adding the Spanish side to their portfolio. However, after months of talks, the group has now stepped away from the deal. The expected takeover cost, combined with Spain’s strict financial regulations, is believed to have been a major factor in their decision.

FSG even sent a delegation to Spain in August to review Getafe’s financials and infrastructure. Discussions were said to be positive, with former Liverpool sporting directors Michael Edwards and Julian Ward—along with Pedro Marques—playing key roles thanks to their expertise and language skills.

Although Getafe president Ángel Torres reduced the club’s valuation to around £100m, much lower than previous figures intended to deter bidders, FSG ultimately chose to walk away.

FSG, who have owned Liverpool for 15 years and also control the Boston Red Sox, have long aimed to expand into a multi-club model. Manchester City’s City Football Group and Chelsea’s BlueCo have already invested in this strategy, while Liverpool explored the possibility of buying Toulouse in 2024 but didn’t move forward.

Edwards, Ward and Marques have evaluated more than 20 European clubs with growth potential, with the multi-club project being a major reason Edwards returned to FSG in 2024. He has previously researched clubs such as Málaga and Bordeaux, but FSG opted against moving for them.

With Getafe now off the table, FSG will continue their search for the right European club to add to their football portfolio.
