Liverpool’s underperforming summer signing Florian Wirtz could already be on his way out, with reports suggesting he might be included in a swap deal with Real Madrid.
The German midfielder has struggled to settle since his move from Bayer Leverkusen, raising doubts about his long-term future at Anfield.
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that there’s growing chatter behind the scenes about Wirtz potentially being used in an exchange for Rodrygo Goes.
What’s being said about the possible Wirtz–Rodrygo swap?
Speaking on Football Insider’s podcast, Wyness said he’d heard claims that Wirtz could be lined up for a shock move to the Bernabéu. Despite Wirtz arriving only months ago, Wyness suggested the rumour shouldn’t be dismissed.
“I think Rodrygo will end up at Spurs, but the whisper I heard was a potential swap deal involving Wirtz from Liverpool,” he said.
“Given how Wirtz has started, it’s not impossible. He might suit Real Madrid and La Liga more. I didn’t rule it out.”
Still, Wyness believes Tottenham could push hardest financially for Rodrygo, though the Liverpool–Wirtz link “made some sense” to him.
Should Liverpool give up on Wirtz already?
Many fans will be disappointed with Wirtz’s slow start, but patience is still likely. The 22-year-old was a standout talent at Leverkusen and clearly hasn’t lost that quality overnight.
He may simply need more time to adjust to Arne Slot’s system, the Premier League, and new teammates.
Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann also defended Wirtz, arguing that Liverpool’s attackers aren’t taking advantage of the chances he creates.
Nagelsmann told Sky Sports:
“Liverpool could help him by putting away the opportunities he sets up. The whole team isn’t as stable as last year, so it’s harder for him to make an impact. He just needs more time, which is normal for players coming into the Premier League.”
