Liverpool’s big-money signing Florian Wirtz could surprisingly be on his way out already, with reports suggesting he might be used in a swap deal with Real Madrid.
The German midfielder has found it tough to settle since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, and his early struggles have sparked rumours about a quick exit from Anfield.
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness claims there’s increasing chatter within the football world that Wirtz could be included in a deal that would see Real Madrid’s Rodrygo Goes move to Liverpool.

Speaking on Football Insider’s podcast, Wyness revealed he’d heard whispers that Wirtz could be heading to the Bernabéu—despite only spending a few months at Liverpool.
“I think Rodrygo ends up at Spurs, but the whisper I heard was a possible swap deal involving Wirtz from Liverpool,” he said.
He added that based on Wirtz’s underwhelming start, the move wouldn’t be completely far-fetched, suggesting the 22-year-old might actually be better suited to Real Madrid and La Liga’s style of play. Although Wyness still expects Tottenham to push hardest for Rodrygo, he didn’t dismiss the Liverpool swap rumours.

While fans will understandably be annoyed by Wirtz’s slow start, many will also feel it’s far too early to judge him. He was outstanding at Leverkusen and clearly hasn’t lost his talent.
It may simply be a case of adapting to Arne Slot’s system, new teammates, and the demands of Premier League football. He’s also not the only Liverpool player struggling right now.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann even defended Wirtz recently, saying Liverpool’s poor finishing is making him look worse than he is. He also pointed out that the club is less stable this season, making it harder for new players to find their rhythm.
According to Nagelsmann, Wirtz just needs more time—something that many players require when transitioning to English football.
