A member of Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League-winning squad has resurfaced in England as he hunts for a new club — and his latest destination may surprise some fans on Merseyside.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who joined Liverpool in 2017 during Jurgen Klopp’s third season and went on to win the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and both domestic cups, left Anfield in 2023. After two years with Besiktas, where wage-cut discussions broke down, he was released in August and has been without a club since.
Oxlade-Chamberlain makes unexpected return to England
The 32-year-old has now been seen training at one of his former clubs, though not the one where he lifted the Premier League title.
Sky Sports footage, shared via GOAL, shows Oxlade-Chamberlain taking part in sessions with Arsenal’s under-21s. The midfielder left the Gunners for Liverpool back in 2017 but has returned to London simply to stay fit while he weighs up his next move.
Former Liverpool man still fondly remembered
Although it might raise a few eyebrows to see him working with a major Liverpool rival, Oxlade-Chamberlain spent six years at both Arsenal and Liverpool. A return to the Gunners seems unlikely unless it mirrors Jay Spearing’s role at Liverpool, where he trains with the under-21s as an overage player while coaching at the academy.
Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed some standout moments during his LFC spell — including that rocket against Manchester City in the Champions League and a long-range strike in the 5-5 Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal in 2019.
At 32, he still has time for another chapter at the top level, and wherever he ends up, he’ll always be welcomed warmly back at Anfield for his contributions during the Klopp era.
