Khalid Boulahrouz urges Liverpool to move for van de Ven

Former Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz has been blown away by van de Ven’s performances, and believes he would be the perfect long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

Speaking to ESPN NL, Boulahrouz highlighted van de Ven’s power, blistering pace and growing authority, noting that opponents often don’t even attempt to run past him anymore. While he admits the 23-year-old can still sharpen his work on the ball, he considers him a fantastic overall defender.

Boulahrouz claimed van de Ven is the ideal replacement for van Dijk for both the Dutch national team and Liverpool. He also questioned how long van Dijk will continue at the highest level after the World Cup, given the physical toll of years in the Premier League.

He added that if Liverpool want a world-class left-sided centre-back and have the funds, van de Ven would be an obvious target. He believes Ronald Koeman already recognises that van Dijk’s successor is emerging.

Could Liverpool make a move now?

Van Dijk recently signed a new deal keeping him at Anfield until 2027 and remains Liverpool’s top central defender ahead of Ibrahima Konaté. That may delay any need for a replacement, though the Dutchman could be shifted to the right side to accommodate van de Ven if Liverpool chose to bring him in earlier.

Regardless of Liverpool’s intentions, plenty of clubs are likely to show interest. Tottenham must act quickly to secure van de Ven on a long-term contract — he is far too valuable a player to risk losing.
