Very soon…’ – Ibrahima Konate teases contract ‘decision’ as Liverpool talks continue
Ibrahima Konaté has played down claims that Liverpool have already put a new contract on the table, but the defender says he expects to reveal his plans for the future “very soon”.
With just eight months left on his current deal, the 26-year-old continues to be linked with a possible switch to Real Madrid, especially as he’ll be free to discuss a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January.
Recent reports (via CaughtOffside) suggested Liverpool had issued a firm take-it-or-leave-it proposal, but Konaté has now dismissed those stories.
Konaté clarifies his contract position
Speaking to the media while on duty with the French national team, the centre-back explained where things currently stand with Liverpool.
He said (via Sky Sports News, translated):
“I’ve seen a lot being said, especially in the press. I even saw claims that Liverpool gave me a new offer recently. I don’t know where that came from. My agents are still in talks with Liverpool. I hope everything will be sorted and I can announce my decision very soon.”
A positive update for Liverpool
His comments strike a more optimistic tone than Mo Salah’s uneasy stance this time last year, when the Egyptian suggested he was “more out than in” before eventually signing fresh terms.
Andy Robertson has also spoken recently about his own future, saying he feels calm about the situation despite offering no clues as to whether he’ll extend his stay beyond next summer.
While Konaté has faced criticism at times this season for a few costly mistakes, he remains an integral part of Liverpool’s defence—especially with Giovanni Leoni sidelined long-term. Losing another centre-back would be a major blow.
From what he’s said publicly, Konaté appears open to committing to a new deal that would keep him at Anfield through the best years of his career. He’s widely seen as a long-term leader in the back line once Virgil van Dijk eventually moves on.
Liverpool will hope the situation is resolved soon, allowing the Frenchman to focus fully on his football without any ongoing uncertainty over his future.
