Liverpool pair see their World Cup hopes crushed in dramatic stoppage-time scenes, while a former Anfield star shines on the big stage
Two Liverpool players saw their hopes of reaching the World Cup collapse in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon.
While several of Arne Slot’s stars – including Alisson Becker, Alexis Mac Allister, Mo Salah, Wataru Endo, Ibrahima Konaté and Hugo Ekitike – can look ahead to next summer’s tournament in North America, others are still awaiting their fate as the final round of qualifiers unfolds.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez were both in action for Hungary in Budapest against the Republic of Ireland, who had former Liverpool title-winner Caoimhin Kelleher in goal.
Late heartbreak for Liverpool pair in World Cup qualifiers
The Hungarian duo each registered an assist to help their side take a 2-1 lead at half-time, a result which would’ve been enough to secure a play-off berth. But the game turned dramatically in the closing stages as Troy Parrott struck twice in the final 15 minutes – completing his hat-trick deep into stoppage time – to snatch a sensational win for Ireland and knock Hungary out of second place in Group F, ending Szoboszlai and Kerkez’s World Cup ambitions.
Kelleher also played a decisive role, making five saves – including a crucial late stop to deny Szoboszlai when the score was level at 2-2.
Szoboszlai and Kerkez shine despite elimination
Despite the crushing outcome, both Liverpool players delivered standout performances.
According to Sofascore, Szoboszlai won 10 of his 13 duels, completed 89% of his passes, made four of five dribbles, created five chances, and contributed five clearances plus a last-man tackle.
Kerkez was equally impressive, winning seven of 10 duels, completing 88% of his passes, making 12 defensive actions and producing five key passes.
Their despair contrasted sharply with the celebrations of Kelleher, who has been a key figure in Ireland’s remarkable turnaround in qualifying. Ireland now wait for Thursday’s play-off draw to discover their final hurdle to the World Cup.
As for Szoboszlai and Kerkez, Liverpool will hope the pair can recover from this bitter setback before returning to action against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
