It’s been reported that Liverpool have kicked off negotiations for a new deal, and the player is pleased with his situation at Anfield
Liverpool have reportedly begun discussions over a fresh contract for one of Arne Slot’s key performers.
Although securing new deals for Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson remains a top priority for FSG — with both defenders set to become free agents next July — the club are already moving ahead with long-term plans for other important members of the squad.
Lewis Steele recently suggested that negotiations are already “underway” regarding potential extensions for Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. The Athletic’s Gregg Evans also revealed that “initial” talks have started with the Hungarian skipper.
Liverpool open contract talks with Szoboszlai
According to Football Insider’s transfer reporter Pete O’Rourke, Liverpool’s No. 8 is now in line for an upgraded deal as recognition for his outstanding form this season.
O’Rourke explained:
“Szoboszlai’s versatility has been invaluable for Slot. He’s featured at right-back, as a defensive midfielder, and as an attacking midfielder. He’s genuinely one of Europe’s finest young midfielders right now.
“Liverpool have zero intention of letting him go. They’ve opened talks over a new contract and improved wages to reflect his importance. The club will do everything possible to keep him amid speculation that other big clubs could try to tempt him away.
“Everything suggests he’s settled at Anfield. He’s comfortable with his role and appears willing to agree fresh terms.”
A new deal for Szoboszlai is an easy decision
With multiple reputable outlets reporting that early discussions have begun, it’s clear Liverpool are eager to secure Szoboszlai’s long-term future—despite more than two and a half years remaining on his current contract.
O’Rourke acknowledged rumours linking the 25-year-old with Real Madrid and Manchester City, a testament to his form, though a departure from Anfield seems highly unlikely at this stage.
Despite Liverpool’s rough spell in the autumn, Szoboszlai has logged the joint-highest minutes in the squad this season (Transfermarkt), highlighting Slot’s trust in him and his central role in the team.
His adaptability is a major strength, but he has been at his most influential in his natural attacking midfield role—so much so that Florian Wirtz has occasionally been shifted wide or dropped from the starting XI to accommodate him.
The fact Liverpool are already pushing for a new contract even with ample time left on his current deal underscores how highly he’s valued at the club. And with Szoboszlai happy on Merseyside, a new agreement should be straightforward to finalise.
