One Liverpool player could soon be facing a very uncertain future as his battle for regular minutes continues this season.
Harvey Elliott left Anfield for Aston Villa on deadline day in the summer, heading out on an initial loan that would become permanent once he reached 10 appearances for the Midlands club (The Athletic). However, he’s been stuck on just five outings since early October, and although Lewis Steele has hinted that Liverpool could recall him, nothing concrete appears to be happening yet.
Elliott return to Liverpool remains on the table
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast (via Football Insider), Pete O’Rourke suggested that Unai Emery’s side may now be hesitant to complete the permanent part of the deal.
The reporter explained: “They might explore whether he’d be better off going somewhere else. It’s been far from the perfect loan – he hasn’t had the minutes he expected. Villa are seemingly having second thoughts about making the move permanent. If he’s not going to be in Emery’s plans, a January return to Liverpool is certainly possible.”
Liverpool should push for a recall if he continues to be overlooked
With Elliott reportedly frustrated by his lack of opportunities — just 167 minutes of football so far — it’s clear that the current situation benefits nobody. If he’s still nowhere near the 10-game threshold by January, keeping him at Villa Park would make little sense. A recall would at least allow Liverpool to reassess his situation and explore fresh options.
While it still feels unlikely that he’ll play a major role for the Reds again, especially after struggling for game-time under Arne Slot last season, the door shouldn’t be completely closed. Should injuries or other setbacks hit Liverpool’s attacking ranks, there could yet be a route back into the squad for the England under-21 international, provided the club can bring his underwhelming Villa spell to an end.
What is clear is that the current scenario cannot continue indefinitely. If Emery isn’t planning to use him, Liverpool must act decisively, bring Elliott back to Merseyside, and rethink the next step in his career.
