Real Madrid issue apology over error in tribute video for Diogo Jota and André Silva.

Real Madrid have apologised after accidentally displaying the wrong André Silva in a tribute to former Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother. Jota and his brother André were killed in a car crash on July 3, and the club honoured them in a memorial video at their Annual General Meeting. However, the video mistakenly featured a photo of Elche forward André da Silva instead of Jota’s brother, who shared the same name.

In a statement, Madrid said: “Real Madrid C.F. apologises to Elche C.F. and their player André da Silva for unintentionally using his image in place of André Silva, the brother of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, in our memorial video. We regret this error.” Club president Florentino Pérez also acknowledged and apologised for the mistake during his speech.

The error is especially awkward given that Madrid face Elche on Sunday, and da Silva is a well-known figure, having earned 53 caps for Portugal and played for major clubs such as AC Milan, Porto, Sevilla and Real Sociedad. Madrid had already honoured Jota and his brother on November 3 before their Champions League match against Liverpool.

At that earlier tribute, Trent Alexander-Arnold led the memorial by laying a wreath and a red PlayStation controller, along with a message to his late friend: “My mate Diogo. You are so missed and still so loved… Yours and André’s memory will always live on.” He was joined by teammate Dean Huijsen, manager Xabi Alonso, and club legend Emilio Butragueño. Alonso also placed a wreath, carrying Real Madrid’s condolences to Liverpool FC and Jota’s family, mourning the loss of an outstanding player and person.
