Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool are holding internal talks, with Arne Slot providing an update as the club navigates what’s being described as a “difficult” situation
Fabrizio Romano has offered fresh insight into Arne Slot’s standing with Liverpool’s decision-makers following another damaging weekend for the Reds.
Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Anfield to Nottingham Forest dropped the reigning champions into the bottom half of the Premier League, increasing the scrutiny on the head coach.
Despite the backlash, Gary Neville insists Slot’s job shouldn’t be in danger, and it seems Liverpool’s hierarchy aren’t considering any rash decisions over the Dutchman’s future.
Slot still has the full backing of Liverpool’s hierarchy
Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano explained that while Slot accepts the need for rapid improvement, the club’s leadership remains firmly behind him. Stakeholders are reviewing the situation calmly and have no plans to seek a replacement.
Romano said: “Right now, Liverpool aren’t making any moves to replace Arne Slot. The situation remains under control.
“It’s complicated and difficult – an emergency, even – and Liverpool are having internal discussions involving the manager, the staff, and the hierarchy. The players have also been handed responsibility.”
He added that Slot understands things must change quickly, particularly in the Premier League, where results have been far below expectations. For now, the owners and senior figures at the club continue to support him and expect a turnaround.
Liverpool are right to be patient – but Slot needs results fast
Slot knows that reputation offers little protection when a club of Liverpool’s size endures such a poor run, with the Reds losing eight of their last 11 games in all competitions, only one fewer than the total for all of last season.
Danny Murphy has urged the manager to shoulder responsibility for the disastrous autumn, while also stressing that the players must step up and help drag the team out of this slump.
We remain confident that Slot is the right man to steady the ship, but he may need to temporarily adapt his principles and adopt a more pragmatic approach to spark an upturn in form.
At many clubs, Slot would likely be under far greater threat, but Liverpool traditionally avoid knee-jerk sackings and value long-term stability. Things would need to deteriorate significantly for FSG to seriously consider removing him.
Even so, Slot could do with a couple of quick wins to relieve the pressure and lift the gloomy mood surrounding Anfield.
