Liverpool make ‘contact’ with a potential manager as questions continue to swirl over Arne Slot’s future
Liverpool have reportedly made contact with a potential managerial candidate as uncertainty grows around Arne Slot’s future.
Slot is under increasing pressure after suffering his sixth Premier League defeat of the campaign, a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield. With just 18 points from 12 matches, the champions sit in the bottom half of the table and look highly unlikely to defend their title.
Fabrizio Romano recently provided an update on Slot’s situation, noting that while no decision has been made yet, removing the Dutchman would cost Liverpool a significant sum due to his contract running until 2027.
A number of alternative options have already been linked, and a new name has now surfaced.
According to Bayern Space — the outlet that first broke Florian Wirtz’s move to Liverpool — sporting director Richard Hughes has approached the agent of Julian Nagelsmann to gauge his future plans. Nagelsmann’s representative, Volker Struth, remains closely connected to Bayern Munich due to the coach’s ongoing ties with the club.
The report claims Bayern have been informed that Liverpool made initial, informal contact in recent days. These early discussions were described as “loose” and “precautionary,” aimed solely at understanding Nagelsmann’s long-term intentions should Liverpool part ways with Slot.
Hughes has been told, however, that Nagelsmann will not leave the Germany job before next summer’s Euros under any circumstances. Depending on the national team’s performance, an early exit from his contract could become possible — especially for a club of Liverpool’s stature.
There are even suggestions that Jürgen Klopp is encouraging Liverpool to pursue Nagelsmann and that the former Reds boss would be considered as a replacement for his compatriot in the Germany role.
Nagelsmann’s arrival could benefit Florian Wirtz
Should Nagelsmann take over at Anfield, he may help revive the form of Florian Wirtz, who has struggled to settle since his £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old has so far failed to reproduce last season’s brilliance.
Nagelsmann, who coaches Wirtz for Germany, has defended him amid recent criticism, insisting his Liverpool teammates must do more.
“Liverpool could also help him by putting away some of the chances he creates,” he said. “They just don’t seem to want to shoot.”
