A journalist has rubbished the rumours, branding them “nonsense” and firmly denying that Liverpool have made any approach for the 38-year-old manager.
Reports from Europe claiming that Liverpool have opened talks with a possible successor to Arne Slot have been quickly shot down as “nonsense”.
Slot is currently experiencing his toughest spell since arriving at Anfield, losing eight of his last 11 games across all competitions and seeing the reigning Premier League champions slip to 12th with a third of the campaign gone.
Despite the poor form, both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher insist the 47-year-old is still the right man for the job. Fabrizio Romano also confirmed on Monday that the Liverpool hierarchy remain fully behind their current head coach.
Dominic King dismisses claims of Liverpool ‘contact’ with Nagelsmann
German reports over the last day suggested that sporting director Richard Hughes had made ‘contact’ with Volker Struth, agent of Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.
However, on Tuesday afternoon, Mail Sport’s Merseyside correspondent Dominic King debunked the story on X, writing: “Talk about Julian Nagelsmann being a contender to replace Slot: nonsense. He wasn’t a candidate to replace Klopp and Liverpool aren’t looking to change their head coach.”
Slot retains the full trust of Liverpool’s leadership
With reliable voices like Romano stating that Slot still enjoys the club’s backing, speculation about potential successors seems far off the mark.
FSG showed similar patience with Jurgen Klopp during a difficult stretch in his second season, and were rewarded when he went on to deliver a haul of major trophies.
Nagelsmann may attract interest after next summer’s World Cup, when his contract with Germany expires, but for now any talk of him taking over at Anfield is unrealistic.
At present, discussions about Slot’s replacement hold no relevance. The Dutchman is expected to remain in charge until at least the end of his contract in June 2027 — and potentially longer if he recaptures last season’s form.
He will hope to silence any lingering doubts with a quick turnaround in results, starting with Wednesday’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, but all indications from trusted sources are that FSG have no plans to part ways with him.
