Fabrizio Romano describes Tottenham’s January interest as nothing more than fantasy.

Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on the idea that one of Tottenham’s main midfield targets could be on the move in January.

Spurs are widely believed to be exploring midfield additions for the winter window — unsurprising given their struggles to create chances from the centre of the pitch. Xavi Simons has yet to make a real impact since arriving in North London, and doubts remain over whether Bentancur and Palhinha provide enough quality on the ball.

Recent reports have linked the club with a potential swoop for Napoli’s Scott McTominay, who has significantly elevated his performances since leaving Manchester United for Italy last year. Journalist Pete O’Rourke even suggested the midfielder would be an excellent fit for Thomas Frank’s system.

But Romano has now stated on his Italian YouTube channel (via BBC Sport) that the 28-year-old is not expected to return to England in January. He went as far as calling the rumours “fantasy”, insisting the Scotland international is settled and content at Napoli. Interestingly, he also noted that the clubs showing concrete interest in McTominay are sides like Everton, who, like Spurs, cannot offer Champions League football.

Spurs, meanwhile, are also said to be targeting other midfielders with Premier League experience — a profile they believe can make an instant impact in Frank’s squad, much like Joao Palhinha. Alongside McTominay, former Chelsea man Conor Gallagher is reportedly on their radar, while Tottenham are also thought to be considering offering Ruben Neves a path back to England from Al-Hilal.
