Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged Arne Slot to consider dropping Mohamed Salah due to his poor form — warning that failing to do so could cost the manager his job.
Hamann believes Salah no longer deserves an automatic place in the starting lineup. The Egyptian superstar, who was sensational last season as Liverpool stormed to the Premier League title, has struggled badly in the current campaign.
Salah criticised after PSV defeat
Liverpool were humiliated 4–1 by PSV Eindhoven at Anfield on Wednesday night, and Salah’s display came under heavy fire from Hamann. Speaking to RTE Sport, he argued that Salah was largely at fault for PSV’s second goal, accusing him of failing to put in the required effort defensively.
“I thought Salah would be among the first players to be dropped, but I’m not sure because the manager relies on him,” Hamann said. “Now Slot has a big decision: does he go down with Salah, or does he try to save his job without him?
“What Salah did for PSV’s second goal was disgraceful. For a player of his quality — and I hate to say it because he’s carried this team for seven or eight years — the way he let Mauro Junior run by him without helping the team was unacceptable.”
What next for Slot and Salah?
Slot is under intense pressure following Liverpool’s dismal run, with nine defeats in their last twelve matches. While the manager is facing scrutiny, many believe the players are also failing him — and Salah is far from the level he once was. Whether it’s age or attitude, he clearly needs to offer more if he wants to keep his place.
