“We continue to fight” – Arne Slot stays resolute after holding ‘discussions’ with Liverpool’s top brass
Arne Slot has vowed that he will “fight on” as Liverpool head coach despite the team’s ongoing slump.
Wednesday’s 4-1 humiliation against PSV Eindhoven marked Liverpool’s ninth loss in 12 matches, sparking claims that the Dutchman could have just a week — and three league games in seven days — to save his job.
Even so, journalist Lewis Steele reported on Thursday that the 47-year-old still has the support of the club’s hierarchy, though they expect a swift turnaround.
Slot confirms talks with Liverpool chiefs
Speaking at his press conference before Sunday’s clash with West Ham, Slot was asked whether he’d spoken to sporting director Richard Hughes or other senior figures since the PSV defeat.
He said (via Liverpool FC on YouTube): “We’ve had the same discussions we always have. We keep fighting and trying to improve. The conversations haven’t changed from the last year and a half.”
Pressure rising on the Dutchman
Despite Slot’s defiance in public, pressure will only increase if the champions fail to beat 17th-placed West Ham, with Sunderland and Leeds to come shortly after.
Liverpool rarely sack managers mid-season — it’s happened just twice since 2000 — and FSG may still show patience given last season’s achievements. But history shows that even title-winning managers aren’t immune if results collapse.
For now, Slot remains in charge, but the goodwill earned from last season is disappearing fast. He and the squad must deliver a response on Sunday.
