Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté Issues Heartfelt Message Following Intense Criticism from Jamie Carragher
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has issued a heartfelt message as scrutiny over his performances intensifies this season. Despite lifting the Premier League title just months ago, the Reds have looked unrecognisable throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
Arne Slot’s side were dismantled 4-1 by PSV at Anfield in their latest Champions League match, their third straight defeat. Conceding three or more goals in each of those losses has placed the back line firmly under the microscope.
No defender has absorbed more criticism than Konaté, who has become the focal point of fans’ frustrations.
Konaté Breaks Silence Amid Difficult Spell
Posting on social media, the 26-year-old stressed that he and his teammates must “fight” their way back to form. His emotional message read:
“We have to take this moment on the chest. Criticism is part of football, and we’ll fight back every time and come through this storm. In these moments, the fans matter most. The ones who stand with us in the good times and the bad — the ones who sing for us even in the difficult moments! Your voice and your support mean everything to us. We know we need to improve and we’ll keep fighting for you. Always.”
Liverpool currently sit 12th in the Premier League, having won and lost six games apiece. Their Champions League campaign has also been inconsistent, with three victories and two defeats leaving them 13th in the competition standings.
Carragher Among Konaté’s Harshest Critics
Konaté’s comments come after a surge in criticism, with Jamie Carragher among the most vocal. After the PSV defeat, the former Liverpool defender even suggested Arne Slot should lose his job for continuing to select the Frenchman.
Konaté endured a difficult night and played a major part in PSV’s third goal, misjudging the ball before Couhaib Driouech pounced to make it 3-1. Reacting live to the error, Carragher exclaimed: “Oh my God, Konaté! Watch Konaté here, oh my God!”
He later added: “I’ve f***ing had enough of them, honestly. That Konaté — that’s a sackable offence for the manager to keep picking him. He should be sacked for that.”
This isn’t the first time Carragher has criticised the centre-back. After Liverpool’s opening 4-2 win over Bournemouth, he claimed Konaté had a “really poor night,” prompting Matt Le Tissier to argue that the defender deserved “a bit more slack.”
Konaté’s contract expires this summer, and with long-standing links to a free transfer to Real Madrid, speculation around his future is unlikely to ease the pressure during such a turbulent spell.
