Arne Slot Learns How Much Time He Has to Turn Things Around After Heavy PSV Defeat
Arne Slot’s Liverpool side have now suffered nine defeats in their last 12 matches, and the pressure on the Dutchman is intensifying.
Slot Warned Over How Long He Has Left
Slot has been told exactly how much time he has to save his job after Liverpool’s slump continued with a heavy 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.
The Reds have now been beaten in nine of their previous 12 outings across all competitions, conceding three or more goals in each of their last three matches. The latest setback — a bruising defeat that also sparked an explicit post-match outburst from Curtis Jones — has amplified the growing concern around the manager.
Ivan Perišić put PSV ahead from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk conceded his third penalty of the season. Dominik Szoboszlai briefly restored parity, but second-half strikes from Guus Til and a brace from Couhaib Driouech condemned the reigning Premier League champions to a second heavy home defeat in the space of a week.
Slot, who guided Liverpool to the league title in April during his debut season and spent £450 million rebuilding the squad, is now enduring the toughest stretch of his tenure.
With doubts emerging over his ability to steady the ship, club legend Jamie Carragher believes the manager’s future hinges on the next three fixtures. Carragher stated that anything less than seven points from matches against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds United should result in Slot losing his job.
Writing in The Telegraph, Carragher said: “Arne Slot has a week to save his job,” reiterating his belief the Dutchman “should be sacked” for repeatedly selecting the struggling Ibrahima Konaté.
He continued: “It is hard to believe this is being written, but Liverpool’s next three games — West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United — must yield at least seven points. Anything less will make an already unacceptable situation untenable. No matter how much goodwill the manager has, the club cannot tolerate the drastic dip in standards over the last three months.”
Carragher added that while the upcoming opponents offer a favourable chance to rebound, failure to improve would force the club to “find someone else who can.”
Liverpool’s Position on Slot After PSV Collapse
Slot remains under contract until 2027 and has even held talks regarding an extension. Because of the length of his deal, sacking him would cost Liverpool around £10 million.
Nonetheless, according to Mail Sport journalist Lewis Steele, the club’s hierarchy still back Slot, with sources close to both the manager and the board insisting that faith in him remains intact.
Speaking after the PSV defeat, Slot addressed concerns over his future: “I’m OK. I have a lot of support from above. Of course it would be nice to turn things around and get a win, but if you’re a coach and results aren’t going well, it’s normal for questions to be asked.
“I’m comfortable with my position. This isn’t the first time I’ve faced a difficult situation, but it’s definitely time for us to turn it around.”
Now 12th in the Premier League, Liverpool travel to West Ham for a 2:05pm kick-off on Sunday.
