Luis Enrique Expresses His Thoughts on Liverpool After Being Tipped as Their Top Choice
Luis Enrique has shared his thoughts on Liverpool amid reports that he is the club’s top target to replace Arne Slot if the Dutchman is sacked.
Liverpool’s struggles continue, with nine defeats in their last 12 games across all competitions, including a 4-1 Champions League loss to PSV on Tuesday. The Reds have slipped out of the Premier League’s top half and now sit below Merseyside rivals Everton after the Toffees’ 1-0 win at Manchester United.
The next eight days could be crucial for Slot, with away matches against struggling West Ham and Leeds, followed by a home game against Sunderland on December 2. Reds legend Jamie Carragher has suggested that anything less than seven points from these fixtures could put Slot’s job in jeopardy.
Historically, Liverpool rarely change managers mid-season, with Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers being exceptions in the past century. Should Slot depart, The Sun reports the club would initially approach Jurgen Klopp to act as interim manager until the season’s end, with PSG’s Enrique reportedly being the long-term target. Enrique led PSG to their first Champions League title last season and has managed the club since 2023.
Enrique has long expressed an interest in managing in England. Back in 2013, he told FourFourTwo: “I’d like to manage in England at some point… It would depend on the team and the football they played.” He also studied Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers during his first season, praising the way Rodgers organized his team.
More recently, ahead of PSG’s Champions League clash with Liverpool in March 2025, Enrique acknowledged the Reds’ strength: “Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe in recent years… They know how to press, defend and attack. They can build calculated attacks and counter effectively. They’re a very complete team.”
