Enrique’s message on Liverpool resurfaces after reports he’s their No.1 choice to replace Slot
Luis Enrique has made his stance on Liverpool clear as rumours grow that he is the club’s top choice to replace Arne Slot if the current manager is dismissed.
Liverpool’s problems deepened after Tuesday’s 4–1 Champions League loss to PSV, their ninth defeat in 12 games across all competitions. The slump has dropped them out of the Premier League’s top half and below rivals Everton, who beat Manchester United 1–0 on Monday. The upcoming week could be decisive for Slot, with away fixtures at struggling West Ham and Leeds followed by a home match against Sunderland on December 2.
Jamie Carragher believes Slot has those three games to “save his job”, writing in The Telegraph that anything fewer than seven points would leave the Dutchman’s position “untenable”. Although Liverpool rarely sack managers mid-season—only Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers have been dismissed early in the past century—The Sun reports that if Slot is removed, the club would first ask Jurgen Klopp to return as interim boss until the summer.
Their preferred long-term option is said to be PSG manager Enrique, who led the French side to their first Champions League triumph last season. The Spaniard has long expressed interest in managing in England, telling FourFourTwo back in 2013 that he would like to coach in the Premier League, depending on the club and style of play. In that same interview, he said he admired how Brendan Rodgers had Liverpool playing in his debut season.
More relevant now are Enrique’s remarks from March 2025, before PSG faced Liverpool in the Champions League last 16—a tie the French club won on penalties after a 2–2 aggregate draw. Ahead of the second leg, which PSG won 2–1 at Anfield, Enrique praised Liverpool as one of Europe’s top sides in recent years. He described them as the strongest team in that season’s Champions League and commended Slot for shaping a balanced, cohesive squad capable of pressing, defending, and attacking effectively in the post-Klopp era.
