Tottenham Hotspur dealt another setback as new developments surface over Antoine Semenyo’s transfer situation.

It has now become common knowledge that Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract, which has unsurprisingly triggered significant interest from a host of clubs.

This puts Tottenham in a difficult position, as the Bournemouth forward had been their main transfer target.

In recent days, reports suggested Spurs were worried about Liverpool overtaking them in the chase for Semenyo, with the Reds eager to bring the 25-year-old to Anfield. Manchester City are also strongly interested in Tottenham’s target.

According to a new update from talkSPORT, the Ghanaian winger’s release clause is active during the first half of the January window, and the battle for his signature now includes more than just Spurs and Liverpool.

The report states that Man City are firmly in contention and could play a major role in determining where Semenyo ends up. Pep Guardiola is reportedly a big fan of the Bournemouth star and believes he would strengthen City’s attack. The City manager is concerned about his side’s heavy reliance on Erling Haaland for goals and may therefore approve a move for Semenyo.

Another Premier League club may also hold an advantage in the race. TEAMtalk report that Manchester United possess a “secret weapon” in their push to sign Semenyo and have increased their efforts to secure the winger.

That advantage is Bournemouth technical director Simon Francis, a lifelong United supporter, who is expected to present Old Trafford’s project to the player.
