Thomas Frank Hits Out at Spurs Fans for ‘Unacceptable’ Behaviour in Fulham Defeat
Thomas Frank has hit out at the supporters who jeered Guglielmo Vicario after the Tottenham goalkeeper’s costly mistake in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Fulham. The Italian was caught stranded while trying to clear a loose ball, ultimately handing Fulham their second goal.
Vicario rushed out to deal with the danger but dwelled too long before misplacing his clearance straight to a Fulham player, allowing Harry Wilson to score from distance. The error left the 29-year-old embarrassed, and the home crowd showed their frustration.
Spurs fans booed Vicario every time he received the ball, and he wasn’t the only player targeted by angry supporters, with Pedro Porro involved in a heated exchange after the whistle. But Frank chose to publicly back his keeper.
Frank blasts booing supporters after 2–1 defeat
Vicario has been Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Empoli in 2023 and was making his 93rd appearance, but this was a night both he and Frank will want to forget. The head coach, already under pressure just 13 games into the job, gave a fiery post-match interview on Sky Sports in defence of his player.
Frank said:
“I didn’t like hearing our fans boo him immediately, or when he touched the ball afterwards. They can’t call themselves true Tottenham fans if they don’t back the team on the pitch. After the game, boo all you want — but not during. That’s unacceptable.”
Fans hit back online
Some supporters reacted angrily to Frank’s comments, arguing they have every right to express their dissatisfaction. One wrote:
“Fans pay a lot of money. How dare Frank say anyone who booed Vicario isn’t a true fan? Sack him. He’s a disgrace.”
Another added:
“Frank lecturing the fans like we’re school kids… He’s not fit to wear the badge, and neither is Vicario.”
A third said:
“He’s criticising the people who pay his wages. He won’t last long.”
Vicario’s confidence seemed shaken as the match went on, though he wasn’t the only player to struggle. Fulham repeatedly broke through Spurs’ defence, with Micky van de Ven rescuing his team more than once.
The loss drops Tottenham to 10th, with only one home win this season and three straight derby defeats after losses to Chelsea and Arsenal.
Vicario responds: “I’m a big man”
Speaking after the game, Vicario addressed the boos, saying he understood the frustration:
“It’s part of football. I’m a big man, I’m honest — what can I say? Sometimes supporters have the right to react how they feel. We just have to focus on ourselves. It’s a tough defeat.”
Former Spurs defender Michael Dawson criticised the crowd’s reaction, noting that Vicario still had “another 85 minutes to play” and calling the booing “negativity.”
Vicario will hope to move on quickly when Spurs head to Newcastle on Tuesday, with Frank desperately needing a positive result amid rising tension and a poor start to his tenure.
