Liverpool supporters were heard singing Arne Slot’s name as the match edged towards its conclusion.
The travelling Reds made their backing for the Dutch manager unmistakable after Cody Gakpo wrapped up a 2-0 win over West Ham.
The victory lifts Liverpool back into the top half of the Premier League table and marks their first triumph since November 1.
Liverpool fans rally behind Slot
BBC Sport’s live coverage from the London Stadium picked up the away end showing vocal support for Slot before the final whistle.
It was deserved, too. The head coach made a bold — but ultimately effective — decision to leave Mo Salah out on the right.
Gakpo moved across to the opposite wing to accommodate Florian Wirtz on the left, while Alexander Isak kept his place and later got himself on the scoresheet.
Both decisions were thoroughly justified by the outcome.
No one will feel a bigger sense of relief than Isak, who finally opened his Premier League account for Liverpool.
The striker has faced heavy scrutiny following his highly emotional summer departure from Newcastle.
With his first league goal now secured, the pressure should ease a little for both him and Slot ahead of next week’s clash with Sunderland.
Slot will also have been encouraged by what was arguably Wirtz’s standout display in a Liverpool shirt, especially during the opening 45 minutes.
A result that keeps Slot in the job
There’s little doubt that Slot’s position was in jeopardy heading into the meeting with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side. Had the ex-Feyenoord boss added a fourth straight defeat to his record, it wouldn’t have been shocking if the club had contemplated making a drastic decision.
