A new report claims that crucial internal discussions at Anfield could play a major role in determining Arne Slot’s future
Liverpool’s situation has become so strained that off-field issues are now influencing the wider debate surrounding Arne Slot’s future.
Lewis Steele of Mail Sport reports that the challenges facing the head coach stretch far beyond the training ground and even reach back to his hometown of Bergentheim in the Dutch Bible Belt.
According to the piece, the 47-year-old has been relying heavily on his inner circle as Liverpool endure a dreadful run of nine defeats in their last twelve matches.
Steele details how Slot’s father, Arend — a retired schoolteacher — has always been a tough critic, often calling last season with blunt questions like, “Why did you make that substitution?” or, “How could you only win 2-1?” The journalist adds that Slot would often grin while recounting his dad’s stern verdicts: “This performance wasn’t exciting enough, son.”
Dressing room concerns and leadership questions
The tone of their recent conversations, however, has shifted, with Slot admitting: “As a dad, he knows how tough this is for me… he’s actually more supportive now than when we’re winning.”
Meanwhile, Steele claims leading players in the dressing room are “shellshocked” by the team’s collapse. Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Andy Robertson, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo are said to be searching for answers but struggling to grasp how things have unravelled so fast.
Outside the squad, doubts are also increasing. Jamie Carragher recently warned that anything less than seven points from the upcoming matches against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds would make an already dire situation impossible to justify.
A defining week for Slot
Steele points out that not long ago the question was when Slot would receive a new contract — not whether he might lose his job. But the recent slump has forced scrutiny onto his tactics, selections and overall approach.
The Mail Sport article mentions an online poll involving 7,000 fans, where 71% voted for “Slot out”, as well as the empty seats and boos that followed the full-time whistle against PSV.
Even so, the hierarchy remain supportive and feel Slot still has “credit in the bank”, though they accept that the next three league games will determine whether Liverpool can steady the ship or move closer to a decision few imagined two months ago.
Slot does still have backing from outside voices too, with Thomas Frank insisting: “Arne is clearly an unbelievable coach… he will 1000% find a way out,” offering a more optimistic counterpoint to the scepticism described by Steele.
As the report concludes, this is the most pivotal week of Slot’s managerial career — and last season’s Premier League title won’t protect him if results continue to slide.
