Tottenham Issues a fresh statement on Spurs suffering a stroke

Tottenham have confirmed that former winger Tony Galvin is recovering after suffering a stroke.

Galvin, now 69, played 273 times for Spurs during the 1980s and helped the club secure FA Cup titles in 1981 and 1982. Both finals—against Manchester City and QPR—went to replays, with Galvin featuring in all four matches. Ricky Villa’s iconic solo goal decided the replay against City, but the move began with one of Galvin’s trademark bursts down the left flank.

He also featured in both legs of the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht, which ended 2-2 on aggregate before Spurs won 4-3 on penalties after Galvin had been substituted in the second half.

Although he represented England at school level, Galvin earned 29 caps for the Republic of Ireland and played in all three group-stage games at Euro 1988 under Jack Charlton, including the famous 1-0 win over England.

In 1987, he joined Sheffield Wednesday before reuniting with former Spurs teammate Ossie Ardiles at Swindon two years later. He later served as Ardiles’ assistant at both Swindon and Newcastle.

Posting on X, Spurs wrote: “Everyone at the club sends their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering after a stroke. We’re all with you, Tony.”
