How realistic is Marc Guehi’s January switch to Liverpool after a trusted reporter’s latest update?
Liverpool missed out on signing Marc Guehi just three months ago, but could they make another attempt for the defender when the January window opens?
The 25-year-old was close to joining the Reds late in the summer transfer window before Crystal Palace suddenly withdrew from the deal on deadline day. Since then, rumours have persisted about whether Liverpool’s hierarchy will try to revive the move ahead of 2026.
Spanish journalist Bruno Alemany recently suggested that a transfer to Anfield for the Palace captain is “practically done,” but The Athletic has reported that there’s no guarantee the London club will agree to talks in January. In a Tuesday update, Gregg Evans of The Athletic stated that a mid-season move is unlikely, adding that Guehi may be better off completing the final seven months of his deal at Selhurst Park.
Evans wrote: “Liverpool remain keen on Guehi, but the chances of a January deal are slim. His contract expires in the summer, and negotiating a transfer next month would be complicated. How much is he worth now? More importantly, how much would Liverpool be willing to pay to tempt Palace? And what incentive does Guehi have to leave early?
“As a free agent in the summer, he’d be in a stronger position to secure a bigger contract, and staying at Palace — where he’s playing regularly — could boost his prospects for the upcoming World Cup.”
Liverpool may try to stay patient and wait until the summer to land Guehi on a free rather than paying a premium in January when Palace are reluctant to sell. But can they afford to delay?
