Darwin Núñez Seeks to Quit Al-Hilal – Linked With Unexpected Club Move

Just over five months after his move to Saudi Arabia, Darwin Núñez is already unsettled at Al-Hilal and pushing for a transfer. The Uruguayan striker joined the club in the summer for £56 million after making 143 appearances for Liverpool, where he scored 40 goals and provided 26 assists.

Known as “Captain Chaos” during his Premier League spell, the 26-year-old was constantly involved in dangerous moments around the box. But his inconsistency—ranging from explosive, match-winning displays to games where he struggled badly—along with a fiery temperament, ultimately ended his long-term prospects at Anfield.

He was among several major exits in a summer reshuffle that also saw Arne Slot move on players like Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott. Although many Liverpool fans hoped Núñez would settle quickly in the Middle East—especially after registering six goal contributions in his first six league matches—reports now suggest he wants out already. Brazilian outlet Globo claims he is unhappy with his situation and is eager to leave the Saudi Pro League “as soon as possible,” largely due to concerns about the league’s competitive level and how it might impact his development.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Núñez is reportedly worried about maintaining his place in Uruguay’s squad if he continues playing outside top-tier competition. A move back to Europe would make the most sense, especially given the dramatic moments he produced in England—such as his late double against Newcastle with 10 men and his deft header versus Nottingham Forest.

However, it’s not a European club currently leading the chase. According to Argentine outlet Olé, River Plate have been offered the chance to sign him, though talks have not progressed beyond an initial phone call. The Argentine side reportedly have around £14 million available for transfers—far below his £40 million market valuation.

River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is said to be very interested, and while a permanent transfer would be difficult, a loan deal could be possible. Such a move would bring Núñez closer to family in South America but may not resolve the concerns that are pushing him to leave Saudi Arabia in the first place.
