Tottenham’s first-choice keeper struggling at the club, open to leaving – Agent revives transfer discussions
Inter Milan are reportedly targeting Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as their main signing for next summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian club is planning a major overhaul in goal, with current first-choice Yann Sommer approaching the twilight of his career. Sommer, who turns 37 in December, has been a dependable presence for Inter since joining from Bayern Munich, but his contract expires at the end of this season, and he is expected to leave. Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper Josep Martínez has struggled with personal issues off the pitch, increasing the urgency for Inter to strengthen the position.
Inter’s Interest in Vicario
This is not Inter’s first pursuit of Vicario. They attempted to sign him in 2023 during his impressive spell at Empoli, but the goalkeeper opted to join Tottenham instead. Now, reports suggest Vicario is “keen to return” to Italy, presenting Inter with a chance to reignite their interest.
Vicario’s Situation at Tottenham
Since his arrival, Vicario has been Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper under Thomas Frank. However, Spurs have had a mixed Premier League campaign, winning just five of their first 13 games. Vicario’s performances have also come under scrutiny, particularly following a mistake in Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Fulham last weekend. Gazzetta notes that Vicario is experiencing a “difficult period” in London, both professionally and personally, which has prompted him to consider a move back to Italy. His agent has reportedly “reopened communication channels” with Inter in preparation for a potential transfer.
Financial and Strategic Challenges for Inter
Vicario earns around £2.5 million (€2.85 million) net per year at Tottenham, a salary Inter could accommodate. The bigger obstacle is the transfer fee: Inter would need approval from owners Oaktree Capital to spend approximately €30 million on a 29-year-old keeper under contract until 2028. Tottenham could also push for a higher price, given Vicario’s established status in the Premier League.
Additionally, Inter typically focus on younger players with high resale value, meaning signing Vicario would represent a departure from their usual transfer strategy. Negotiations could also be complicated by a reportedly chilly relationship between Tottenham’s sporting director Fabio Paratici—formerly at Juventus—and Inter’s leadership.

Despite these challenges, Vicario remains Inter’s “main target” for next summer. With Sommer expected to leave and Martínez dealing with off-field issues, securing a reliable and experienced goalkeeper is a top priority.
