Insider reveals Arne Slot’s intentions as the Liverpool manager prepares for major changes.
Liverpool have found it difficult to maintain consistency this season, despite investing significantly in new players during the summer.
The club brought in big names such as Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz to build on last season’s title success, but their campaign has spiralled into major disappointment. They’ve already fallen well behind in the Premier League race, sitting 11 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, making another title push highly unlikely.
Key figures like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah — both of whom signed new deals before the season — have seen their form drop sharply, adding to the team’s struggles.
Slot pushing for more January reinforcements
Arne Slot is now preparing for further squad changes, as he wants additional quality in the January transfer window. A new centre-back is said to be a top priority, with Liverpool seeking someone capable of addressing their defensive issues after poor seasons from Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
Transfer insider Mick Brown told Football Insider:
“I’m told the manager is still unhappy with his squad.
There are positions he feels need strengthening, even after the big summer spend, because performances simply haven’t been good enough.
He wants another centre-half — that’s no surprise.
When you look at this squad, there are still three or four areas that could be improved: centre-back, full-backs, midfield, even a forward with Salah off-form.
It was a huge summer window, and January could be the same because there are still a lot of doubts around this squad.”
Despite the growing uncertainty around his job, Slot believes he can still rescue Liverpool’s season. However, results have been concerning: they’ve already suffered six defeats in their first 14 league games, compared to just four losses during last season’s title-winning campaign.
Could Marc Guehi be the solution?
One potential defensive target is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who has been strongly linked with a switch to Anfield. A move was close in the summer before Oliver Glasner halted the transfer late on.
With Guehi set to become a free agent next summer, Palace may opt to sell in January rather than lose him for nothing, which could open the door for Liverpool to revisit the deal.
