Kelleher admits it was emotional to depart Liverpool, but the choice itself was “simple.”
Caoimhin Kelleher has opened up about his decision to leave Liverpool, discussing the personal and professional reasons behind his departure from the club where he spent a decade.
Speaking on the Ben Foster podcast, the Irish goalkeeper admitted that leaving Anfield was difficult, but he felt the timing was right to pursue regular first-team football.
Kelleher’s Liverpool journey and decision to leave
Kelleher joined Liverpool from Ringmahon Rangers at the age of 16 and spent all of his formative and professional years at the club.
“I was there for 10 years – starting at the Academy at 16 and then progressing through to the first team for about five years,” he said.
The 27-year-old never went out on loan, so all of his playing experience came under Liverpool’s banner, primarily as the reliable No.2 behind Alisson.
Although he maintained strong relationships within the club, Kelleher admitted that the desire for consistent game time was a key factor in his decision to move.
“Being a No.2 is tough; you only get a few games, and you have to perform. But it worked out well for me at Liverpool in the end,” he added.
Over his Liverpool career, Kelleher made 67 appearances, kept 24 clean sheets, and delivered standout performances in cup competitions, including penalty shoot-outs, highlighting his professionalism and commitment.
Managing expectations and media scrutiny
Kelleher also reflected on the pressures that come with leaving a club of Liverpool’s stature.
“I noticed the media attention, especially when you play well. People immediately say you should be playing first-team football. The frustrating part for me was that many assume it’s as simple as just leaving,” he explained.
His departure aligned with Liverpool’s long-term planning, including the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili, which made the move necessary for Kelleher to secure his goal of being a first-choice goalkeeper.
Manager Arne Slot recognized the challenge for Kelleher in accepting a backup role and, along with much of the fanbase, supported his decision to move for regular first-team opportunities.
Kelleher also shared an emotional farewell on social media, thanking the staff, teammates, and supporters for their role in his growth both on and off the field. Liverpool fans can undoubtedly appreciate the loyalty and professionalism he displayed throughout his time at Anfield.
