Chelsea and England legend John Terry has reacted strongly to Mohamed Salah’s controversial interview, as Liverpool face mounting uncertainty heading into the new year. Salah’s claims of being “thrown under the bus” and his admitted breakdown in relations with manager Arne Slot have put both his immediate future and that of the club under scrutiny.
After Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United — a result that leaves the champions with only two wins in their last ten league games — Salah told reporters:
“I can’t believe I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes. I’m very, very disappointed. I’ve done so much for this club over the years, especially last season. Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It feels like the club has thrown me under the bus. I think it’s clear someone wanted me to take all the blame. I had a good relationship with the manager, and suddenly we don’t. I don’t know why, but it seems someone doesn’t want me at the club.”
John Terry backs Salah
It’s easy to forget that Terry briefly captained Salah during their overlapping time at Chelsea. Known for valuing loyalty and respect, one might have expected the retired defender to criticise Salah for going public. Instead, Terry sided with the Egyptian star in a TikTok video:
“Do you think he’s been made a scapegoat by the Liverpool manager? Salah would be the first to admit he’s been out of form this season, but I agree with him — he’s been made a scapegoat to some extent. Many Liverpool players have struggled recently. Leaving him out is a big call, because if there’s one player who can win you a game, it’s him. Respect from the manager is crucial, and clearly, the conversations Salah expected haven’t happened. He’s shown his frustration by speaking out.”
Salah’s potential January exit
Salah’s public comments have already attracted the attention of 13 potential suitors for the January transfer window, including Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Serie A champions Napoli. With the Egyptian international set to depart for AFCON on December 15, his final two Liverpool appearances could already be imminent.
If this marks the end of his Anfield chapter, it would close a remarkable era. Since 2017, Salah has made 420 appearances, scored 250 goals, and helped Liverpool lift a Champions League trophy and two Premier League titles. Yet, as Liverpool’s long-term approach demonstrates, no player is bigger than the club — and the time may have come for the Egyptian King to move on.
