James Maddison is among the pundits on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football tonight. Despite being sidelined with an ACL injury all season, the Tottenham midfielder has offered a fitness update.

“I’m doing really well for the stage I’m at,” he said. “It’s a long road back — I had knee surgery — and a huge part of it is being mentally ready. I’ve had to accept being out for a long time.”

He admitted the injury hit him hard emotionally. It was supposed to be a major season, with a new manager at the club and a World Cup campaign with England, but none of that came to pass. “That wasn’t the path for me,” he added.

Maddison said the key has been celebrating small victories: “Putting my boots back on, getting out on the grass… there’s a lot of steps, but I’m in good hands at Tottenham.”
