Gareth Bale Finally Shares the Real Story Behind His Retirement at 33
Gareth Bale has spoken in detail about why he chose to retire at 33.
In January 2023, just weeks after leading Wales at the World Cup, Bale shocked fans by announcing that he was stepping away from both club and international football with immediate effect. The former Southampton, Tottenham, and Real Madrid star — who had joined LAFC on a one-year deal in June 2022 — revealed the news in an emotional statement on social media.
At the time, Bale described retiring as “the hardest decision of my career” and struggled to express how much playing for Wales meant to him. “How do I explain what this country and this team mean to me? How do I put into words the emotions I felt every time I wore that Welsh shirt?” he said. “I couldn’t do it justice with words.”
Now, more than two years later, Bale has revealed for the first time that his father’s declining health was a major reason behind his decision, forcing him to rethink what mattered most outside of football. “My dad got ill and that played a massive role,” he told GQ Magazine. “People don’t see what goes on at home, and I realised life is bigger than football.”
He also reflected on enjoying a quieter life after retirement. “Our kids, our life, our marriage, our family, our friends — that’s what’s important,” he said. “The things I used to stress about in football now make me laugh. Back then, you’re anxious and nervous and you don’t even enjoy it.”
Bale said watching his children grow has become one of his greatest joys. “Watching my son play football reminds me of my dad watching me. And my daughter’s horse riding — seeing them enjoy things is amazing.”
Bale’s career spanned 17 years and included five Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies. After emerging from Southampton’s academy and becoming their second-youngest debutant at 16, he joined Tottenham in 2007, making 166 appearances before his then-record £85.3m move to Real Madrid.
He finished his career in dramatic fashion, scoring a 127th-minute equaliser for LAFC in their MLS Cup victory over Philadelphia.
