Carragher delivers worrying Mo Salah forecast that Liverpool supporters will desperately hope never comes true
Jamie Carragher has delivered a worrying forecast about Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool — one that is likely to unsettle supporters.
Although the Egyptian still has 18 months left on his contract after signing a two-year extension in April, his place at Anfield has come under intense scrutiny following his explosive post-match interview after the 3-3 draw with Leeds, where he admitted he has “no relationship” with head coach Arne Slot.
That match was the third in a run of five games in which Salah did not start, including being left out of the squad entirely for last week’s Champions League victory away to Inter Milan. It marked the first time in his eight-and-a-half years at Liverpool that he has been sidelined for such a prolonged spell purely by managerial choice.
Carragher’s bleak outlook
Salah featured from the bench in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton — his final appearance before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations — but Carragher believes the 33-year-old will not see out his contract on Merseyside.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender said he cannot envision Salah still being at the club next season, adding that the key question is what version of Salah Liverpool will get for the remainder of the campaign. He also pointed to AFCON and the apparent tension between player and manager as significant factors.
Carragher went further by urging Salah not to consider a January exit, should that option be on the table.
Hoping fan support makes the difference
There is a growing sense that Liverpool may be approaching the closing chapter of one of the greatest careers in the club’s history — the uncertainty lies in when that final goodbye will arrive.
In an ideal world, Salah would fulfil the remainder of his deal and receive a fitting farewell at Anfield in May 2027. At the other end of the spectrum, there is an uncomfortable fear that the Brighton win could prove to be his final appearance before a possible January departure after AFCON.
While such a sudden exit feels unlikely, clearer signs may emerge once Salah returns from international duty. If he reclaims a regular starting role and rediscovers last season’s form, there would be little incentive for him to walk away. Continued exclusion, however, could make a summer departure a realistic possibility.
What remains undeniable is the affection Liverpool fans still hold for him. The Anfield crowd made that abundantly clear on Saturday, and supporters will hope that unwavering backing helps persuade Salah to stay and defy Carragher’s ominous prediction.
