Brock Lesnar’s WrestleMania 42 opponent may have already surfaced — and it’s a blockbuster matchup.

After his stunning return at SummerSlam in August, Brock Lesnar has been officially locked in for WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas next year, with WWE rolling out promotional material and posters confirming his involvement. However, WWE has remained tight-lipped about who will step into the ring with The Beast Incarnate — until now.

Lesnar’s controversial comeback saw him lay out John Cena after the SummerSlam main event, marking his first WWE appearance in two years. His return came after WWE’s legal team cleared him amid Janel Grant’s ongoing lawsuit against Vince McMahon, in which the former UFC heavyweight champion was mentioned.

Since then, Lesnar has wrestled twice: first demolishing Cena at Wrestlepalooza in September, then joining forces with The Vision and Drew McIntyre to defeat Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, CM Punk and The Usos in a blockbuster WarGames clash at Survivor Series last month.

Brock Lesnar’s WrestleMania 42 Direction

Now working a limited schedule, the 48-year-old has made occasional appearances on Raw and SmackDown and has featured heavily in WrestleMania 42 marketing alongside names like Punk, Reigns and Rhodes. WWE also released Lesnar’s first solo WrestleMania advert this week, with the former champion ominously stating: “I’m here to conquer.”

According to Self Made Pro, WWE’s original plan was for Lesnar to face Bron Breakker at WrestleMania 42. However, those plans reportedly changed following Seth Rollins’ shoulder injury against Rhodes at Crown Jewel in October.

Breakker is now expected to challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship — likely a rematch — especially with both men already scheduled to clash on Raw’s Netflix anniversary show in January. That shift has opened the door for Lesnar’s opponent to change, and the name now being strongly linked is the man who recently retired Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event: Gunther.

On the latest Self Made Sessions, it was claimed:

“Gunther is definitely working Brock at WrestleMania. It was originally going to be Bron Breakker versus Brock, but now that Breakker is set for a title match, Brock is facing Gunther.”

A Long-Awaited Dream Match

A Lesnar vs. Gunther showdown has been a fantasy booking favourite ever since The Ring General arrived in WWE — particularly after their brief but intense confrontation during the 2023 Royal Rumble. The two were even rumoured to collide at WrestleMania 40 before those plans were reportedly scrapped following the Janel Grant lawsuit.

Despite that setback, Gunther made it clear in a May 2024 interview with the Daily Mail that facing Lesnar remains a career goal.

“I always saw Brock as my final boss,” Gunther said. “I’ve often been portrayed that way — as NXT UK Champion, Intercontinental Champion — but Brock was the final boss of the entire company. To reach that level, you have to step in the ring with him.

“We’ll see if there’s another chance. I’m more than ready. That face-off in the Royal Rumble and the reaction it got confirmed everything for me.”

If the reports are accurate, WrestleMania 42 could finally deliver one of WWE’s most anticipated dream matches.
