Report sheds light on WWE’s backstage response to fan outrage over John Cena’s final match defeat.
The real backstage response to the backlash over John Cena tapping out to Gunther in the final match of his WWE career has now come to light.
Gunther’s submission victory placed him in an exclusive group, becoming just the fourth Superstar ever to force Cena to give up, joining Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. What made the moment even more jarring for fans was that Cena had not tapped out in over two decades.
Inside Washington DC’s Capital One Arena, the crowd made its feelings clear. As The Ring General repeatedly looked to cinch in his sleeper hold, chants of “Don’t give up” echoed around the building, with supporters desperate to see their hero go out without surrendering.
After a gruelling 23-minute contest, Cena finally submitted, tapping out with a subdued smile. The reaction was immediate and furious, as fans turned their anger toward WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, loudly chanting “You f***** up!”
Backstage Fallout Revealed
Triple H faced heavy boos during his appearance on the post-show panel, with many blaming him for the controversial booking decision. He attempted to frame the crowd response as something he had anticipated.
However, Fightful Select disputed that narrative, reporting that Levesque was smiling after the match and appeared unaware of the backlash that was about to unfold.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer echoed that account, stating that WWE officials were completely “blindsided” by the level of fan outrage over Cena tapping out. The reaction was reportedly so intense that Gunther required extra security just to reach his bus after the show.
Meltzer explained that while there were people within WWE who opposed the decision, the call ultimately came from the top. Publicly downplaying the reaction, he noted, was more of a defence mechanism than a reflection of reality, as there had been no expectation internally that the result would provoke such fury.
Despite the storm of criticism, WWE is said to be sticking with the creative direction, continuing to position Gunther as a dominant “career-ending” figure, with discussions already underway about him potentially retiring two more WWE legends in 2026.
