Alexander Isak’s injury situation could quietly create a major opportunity for Liverpool.
Liverpool’s hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tottenham in North London should have been a moment to celebrate, but the result was quickly eclipsed by a serious injury to record signing Alexander Isak.
The Sweden forward, who joined Liverpool in the summer for a club-record £125 million, opened the scoring in the 56th minute. However, his goal proved costly. After a forceful challenge from Micky van de Ven, Isak went down in clear distress, clutching his lower leg before being helped from the field by the medical team.
With Arne Slot already dealing with limited attacking resources, the setback threatens to significantly alter Liverpool’s campaign — and it may finally present an opening for a previously overlooked player to step into the spotlight.
Isak facing a lengthy spell out
The seriousness of Isak’s injury was later underlined by The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Posting on X, Ornstein revealed:
“Alexander Isak set for period on sidelines with suspected leg break from challenge in Liverpool win at Spurs. #LFC yet to comment on severity but scans poised to confirm fears of fracture to left side; recovery time typically a few months.”
Although Liverpool are still awaiting confirmation from scans, the suggestion of a fractured leg points toward a prolonged absence — potentially keeping Isak out until deep into the spring of 2026.
For a player only just settling at Anfield, the timing could hardly be more unfortunate, coming moments after he netted just his second Premier League goal for the club.
Chiesa handed a potential opening
Liverpool’s attacking crisis has deepened following Isak’s setback. Slot is currently juggling multiple absences in his forward line:

• Cody Gakpo remains out with a muscle injury until at least early January.

With Hugo Ekitike the only remaining senior striker, Slot may no longer have the luxury of keeping Federico Chiesa on the bench.
Despite winning the club’s Player of the Month award in September, the Italian has largely been used as a substitute during the 2025/26 season. Yet whenever called upon, Chiesa has delivered — registering two assists in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton and scoring an important goal against Crystal Palace.
With attacking options running thin, Slot could now be forced to rely on Chiesa more regularly, potentially giving him a sustained run in the starting XI.
