Tottenham coaching staff criticized for recurring issues affecting Guglielmo Vicario.

Guglielmo Vicario made two costly errors against Nottingham Forest, contributing to Tottenham’s disappointing defeat at the City Ground on 14 December. His struggles have continued at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the goalkeeper coming under increasing scrutiny for his inconsistent performances.

Despite the approaching January transfer window, it appears unlikely that Vicario will be replaced. Thomas Frank and his coaching staff face questions over their handling of the Italian, as criticism grows over their inability to address his recurring mistakes both on and off the pitch.

Vicario arrived from Empoli with modest expectations but quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s better goalkeepers. However, his reputation has declined sharply in recent months, with frequent errors casting him more as a liability for Spurs. Former scout Bryan King highlighted these concerns, noting that none of Tottenham’s current goalkeepers inspire confidence. Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said:

“Vicario came in and looked like he could be the answer, but he’s been making errors nearly every game. How can they replace him? Where are they suddenly going to get a goalkeeper who they think could win them the Premier League or a cup? I think they’ve stuck and have to stick with what they’ve got. I’d be looking at the coaching. There are certain things missing in his game, and it seems that the coaches are missing them too.”

With the January window approaching, there has been speculation about Spurs strengthening the goalkeeper position, with names like Ter Stegen and Bart Verbruggen linked to the club. However, neither is seen as a clear upgrade over Vicario. Tottenham may opt to retain the Italian and hope he regains form, but attention appears increasingly focused on the coaching staff’s responsibility to address the underlying issues in his game.
