Arne Slot delivers a firm 15-word verdict on the possibility of Harvey Elliott making a return to Liverpool.

Arne Slot has firmly ruled out the possibility of Liverpool recalling Harvey Elliott from his loan at Aston Villa in January.

The 22-year-old moved from Anfield at the end of the summer transfer window, with the deal set to become permanent once he reaches ten appearances for Unai Emery’s side (The Athletic). However, Elliott has managed just five games since early October and hasn’t featured in a Premier League squad in the past two months (Transfermarkt). His manager has admitted it’s challenging to select the England under-21 star given the strong performances of others in his position.

Despite calls from figures like Don Hutchison for Liverpool to bring Elliott back, Slot publicly dismissed the idea. Speaking at a press conference (via Liverpool Echo), he stated in 15 words: “Harvey is an Aston Villa player and he’s supposed to be there for the season.”
While Slot’s response may be a mark of respect to Villa and an attempt to avoid controversy, privately he may wish to rescue Elliott from his current standstill. Last season, the midfielder was mostly used as a substitute at Anfield.

FIFA rules prevent players from representing more than two clubs in a single season, ruling out a Liverpool move unless it’s to a league with a different calendar, like MLS.

This leaves Elliott in a frustrating position, overlooked by both his parent club and his loan team. His talent is going underutilized at a time when Liverpool could benefit from extra depth in attack. Even if Slot hadn’t planned to give him much playing time, having him available would be valuable.

As for Elliott’s future, it remains uncertain—and he may be the least aware of what comes next.
