Romano hints that Liverpool could still make moves in January as he highlights a potential opening for transfer business
Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Liverpool could still dip into the market when the January transfer window opens.
Despite a huge summer outlay of close to £450m, Arne Slot is facing growing concerns over squad depth, particularly in defence and attack. Injuries have piled up, with Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak ruled out long term, while Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo are also currently unavailable. As a result, Liverpool have been linked with possible winter reinforcements such as Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo.
Romano fuels January transfer talk
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Liverpool have already been exploring potential options behind the scenes and could act if the right opportunity arises.
He revealed that the club made initial enquiries as early as November, including checks on Semenyo, and have continued making further calls throughout December to assess other possibilities. According to Romano, injuries and recovery timelines will heavily influence the club’s decision-making, but he believes there’s a genuine chance Liverpool could complete a January signing.
Where could Liverpool strengthen?
Earlier in the season, a versatile centre-back appeared to be the main priority, especially with injuries to Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley stretching defensive resources. However, Isak’s suspected leg break and Gakpo’s absence, combined with Mohamed Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations involvement, have left Liverpool looking thin in attack as well.
While some players are expected back next month, the Reds are still short of natural options in the final third. Although FSG are known for being disciplined and selective rather than reactive spenders, history shows they are willing to move decisively in January when the right deal presents itself.
From Suarez and Carroll in 2011, to Sturridge and Coutinho, then Van Dijk, Luis Díaz and Gakpo in later years, mid-season signings have often had a major impact at Anfield.
This winter, Guehi and Semenyo appear to be the leading names in the rumour mill. Whether Liverpool manage to land one—or both—could play a big role in shaping their second half of the season. If the club believe the market presents the right opportunity, they’re unlikely to hesitate.
