John Brooks’ performance has come under scrutiny following Tottenham’s 2–1 home defeat to Liverpool.

The referee issued two red cards to Spurs players and controversially allowed Liverpool’s second goal to stand, despite Hugo Ekitike appearing to shove Cristian Romero in the build-up. Thomas Frank believed Brooks got all three major decisions wrong and was frustrated that those calls denied his side the chance to secure a result.

Tottenham are eager to return to winning ways when they visit Crystal Palace on Sunday, but the appointment of the match official has done little to reassure them.

Jarred Gillett has been named as the referee for the Selhurst Park encounter, and his history with Spurs is less than encouraging. Of the 13 matches he has officiated involving Tottenham, they have won six and lost seven.

More concerning is Gillett’s tendency to issue bookings. He has shown Spurs players 31 yellow cards across those 13 games, a worrying statistic given how many members of Frank’s squad are currently close to suspension. Although he has never sent off a Tottenham player, he has also never awarded the club a penalty in those fixtures.

Four Spurs players one booking away from suspension

Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur are all currently on four yellow cards. Any player who receives five bookings within the first 19 league matches of the season will serve a one-match suspension, meaning all four must avoid cautions in the next two league games.

With Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons already suspended after their red cards against Liverpool, Frank will be keen to avoid losing any more players.
