Premier League-winning Liverpool ace grows increasingly uncertain about Arne Slot
Andy Robertson appears to have doubts about Arne Slot’s plans for him.
During the summer window, there were strong rumours that Robertson could leave for a move abroad. In the end, it was Kostas Tsimikas (29) who departed on loan to Roma, with Liverpool choosing to keep faith in Robertson and Milos Kerkez for the 2025/26 campaign a decision that hasn’t yet produced consistent results.
With Robertson playing just 117 Premier League minutes so far, fresh links to Atletico Madrid and other European clubs were always likely. According to Football Insider’s O’Rourke, Liverpool are still negotiating new contracts for Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, but progress has been slow. The Scotland captain is reportedly “uncertain whether he fits into Slot’s long-term vision,” a situation that could encourage interest from Madrid.
As things stand, Liverpool face a simple decision: either back Robertson or give full responsibility to Kerkez down the left. The current setup isn’t offering defensive solidity or attacking creativity, as Kerkez struggles to adapt to an unfamiliar role.
Tactically, Liverpool should lean into their attacking strengths. They may not be capable of building the Premier League’s best defence—especially against a side like Arsenal—but they have the tools to dominate offensively if players like Kerkez are allowed to play naturally.
That could mean Ryan Gravenberch dropping deeper to form a back three. And if that tactical shift ultimately pushes Robertson toward a summer exit to Atletico Madrid, it may be a painful but necessary outcome for the Reds’ evolution.
